So you need to ship your vehicle, but you’re not sure where to start. To help you… we created this insider scoop covering how the industry works to break the ice.
The first thing you should know is that 90% of the time there are 3 parties involved in shipping your vehicle, and their roles.
- A Broker Licensed to access the National Dispatch System
- A Trucker that will physically move your vehicle
To understand how your rate is calculated you have to put yourself in the Truck Driver’s Seat. Pretend your a trucker on your way to pick up vehicles in FL to ship to NY. When you arrive you have a choice of 20-40 vehicles listed (willing to pay) from $400-$600 to be picked up. Now take a good guess at who you’re picking up… The highest bidder of course. The lowest bidder may have to wait weeks before they realize they have to increase their bid to get their vehicle moved.
The solution is team up with the Broker. A qualified Broker can calculate the best rate for your unique situation. Brokers and Truckers communicate through a national dispatch system. A Broker can pull up the dispatch list for your route and see how much other vehicles are listed to move for. From there the Broker can recommend a rate that will get your vehicle moved in the desired time frame you need that fits within your budget.
Once you agree on a rate, the Broker will post your vehicle to be picked up. As soon as an interested trucker calls (which can happen within an hour), the Broker will notify you. From there, the Broker will put you in contact with the Trucker to arrange and schedule your exact Pick-Up and Delivery.
How much will it cost?
A rule of thumb is approximately 32¬¢/mile. The rate can vary depending on gas prices, time of year, vehicle type, whether your vehicle runs, and other factors. Here’s 2 rates to give you an idea of what to expect.
- NY-FL $500-$600
- FL-CA $650-$750
